While we (and Drake) know full well that girls love Beyoncé, feminists have been wrangling with Queen B ever since she embarked on part one of being an independent woman. In the most articulate and thoughtful essay we've read on the subject thus far, Tamara Winfrey Harris, Senior Editor at Racialicious, suggests that our perceptions of the singer/entity as a feminist may say a lot more about our own politics than Bey's...

When it comes to making an impression during a job interview, it's the little things that count. Little things like a good handshake. You don't want it to be too limp (translation: "I'm weak") or too strong ("I'm trying too hard"). And you certainly don't want it to be an awkward encounter. For more "don'ts" in the handshake department, we're letting these awesome, funny, and cringe-worthy GIFs teach the lesson...

So we can all agree that the friend-zone isn't real, right? Some "Nice Guy" complaining about how he got "friend-zoned" by a girl — because heaven knows that if a dude spends any time with a lady and does her the minium kindness like opens a door or doesn't try to assault her, he deserves to get the sex — is pretty much the most obnoxious thing in the world but it continues happen, especially in the Internet's darkest corners. If you hate the term "friend-zone" as much as I do, you'll take great pleasure in this brilliant satire of the whole argument by Tumblr user literaryreference...

Peppering your conversations with "like" can seem like the norm or even cool in high school, but when it comes to the working world, it can discredit your professionalism. You might as well throw in a "whatever" or "as if!" while you're at it. It disrupts the flow of your conversation, and also makes you sound unsure of what you are saying...

HBO’s Game of Thrones has something for everybody — zombies, dragons, manipulation, sex, wolves, Peter Dinklage, violence, politics, homoerotic subtext, songs bysuper hip indie bands, more sex — but what we love most are Westeros’ badass women: the dames of thrones fight, plot, snark, strive, and are as multifaceted and intriguing as their male counterparts. Each week, The Jane Dough will rank the GoT ladies according to how hard they ruled in last night’s episode. Start your Mondays feeling like the commander of dragons, rather than the bleary-eyed version of yourself you usually bring to work at the beginning of the week. When you play the game of feminism, you win or you…well, don’t win...

Annie Londonderry was before her time: free-thinking, daring, entrepreneurial, Annie was cursed with an anachronistic spirit; in the Victorian Age, she was a remarkable anomaly. In 1895, Annie Londonderry became the first woman to bicycle around the globe. In 1947, she died in obscurity. Today on Narrative.ly, Amanda Lin Costa shares this extraordinary woman’s story. Whether [...]..

While our adult selves may cringe at princess culture and the outdated stereotypes that come along with it, there's just something special about the Disney princesses we grew up with like Cinderella, Belle, Snow White, Aurora, and Ariel. And they aren't all damsels in distress; the newer crop of the crowned ladies have attempted to be better role models for little girls. These include Princess Sofia the First and Brave's Princess Merida...

It’s the quintessential American concept: Start a business from a simple idea, and then watch it explode into a multimillion-dollar corporation. Of course, most people who decide to become entrepreneurs have a plan. A little money, perhaps. And maybe some contacts. Mel and Patricia Ziegler, the couple behind the clothing empire Banana Republic, had none of these things. But, in 1978, they did have a vision...

Since the mid-1980s, there has been an exponential increase in the number of girls arrested, waiting in detention, and serving time in foster placement. According to statistics published in 2009, of all juvenile arrests, 25% are arrests for crimes of domestic and family violence. These arrests disproportionally affect girls: although young women represent 29% of all juvenile arrests, they make up 31% of assault arrests, 35% domestic violence arrests, and 41% child-to-parent violence arrests. Our young girls deserve better. ..

At a recent “Lean In” book club at our Manilla offices, we couldn’t help but bring up the topic of negotiating and asking for a raise. Clearly, it’s an issue where there are a lot more questions than answers. Many women I know work under the assumption that if you work hard and follow the rules, rewards will automatically follow. That was my mantra early in my career. On the other hand, men are known to work hard and aggressively pursue increased responsibilities, promotions and pay increases. Much has been written about why women shy away from negotiating and asking for what they deserve. In this article, I break down that penultimate challenge into a series of steps that lay the groundwork and hopefully more than prepares you to make “the ask.”..

Man, Degrassi. How is that school still open? Despite a student body suffering from ALL OF THE ISSUES, Degrassi: The Next Generation continues to churn out alumni. Since it's grad season, and since it's both totally easy to predict who will do well after high school and also a beautiful mystery, we decided to (totally arbitrarily) rank the cast from darkest future to brightest.* Sure, some of them haven't graduated yet, but you usually can kind of tell, riiiiight?..
